Major Track Work and Service Adjustments For STL & KCY

The Union Pacific Railroad will begin a major trackwork project between St. Louis, MO (STL), and Jefferson City, MO (JEF) on Saturday, April 1. This project will continue thru Friday, September 1. To accommodate this trackwork, the schedules of the four trains that operate in this corridor will be changed as follows:

  • Train 311 will depart St. Louis (STL) at 7:30 a.m., 20” earlier, and arrive Kansas City (KCY) at 2:10 p.m., 40” later.

  • Train 316 will depart Kansas City (KCY) at 4:30 p.m., 1’25” later, and arrive St. Louis at 11:10 p.m., 2’25” later.

  • Train 313 will depart St. Louis (STL) at 2:30 p.m., 1’00” earlier, and arrive Kansas City (KCY) at 9:10 p.m., no change.

  • Train 314 will depart Kansas City (KCY) at 7:30 a.m. 25” earlier, and arrive St. Louis (STL) at 2:10 p.m., 35” later.

    (These schedules have already been published in the April 24 National Timetable but will start on April 1)

    A complete schedule showing the times at intermediate stations is given below:

    The work will be performed in 3 separate phases which will require a slightly different operation in each.

    Phase I – April 1 – May 15

    Tie gangs 9161 and 9162, will be working on the Jefferson City Subdivision between STL and JEF beginning Saturday, April 1, until Saturday, May 13. These gangs will work every day from 6:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. installing 84,000 ties on No. 1 Main Track between Kirkwood (KWD), MP 14.0, and Gasconade, MP 72.88, approximately eight miles east of Hermann (HEM).

    During these days all trains are planned to operate with the schedules listed above. Additional freight congestion is anticipated adjacent to the work area but has been compensated by the new schedules. CNOC and the Central Division will be monitoring both the priority handling of our trains thru the work area and any increased congestion. If the congestion appears to be severe on any particular day, we will have the ability to substitute bus service between STL and JEF if necessary.

    Phase 2 – May 16 – July 3

    Undercutter gangs 9160 and 9181 will work on No. 2 Main Track from Grand Avenue, MP 2.60, just west of STL, to Morrison Jct., MP 90.56, ten miles west of Hermann (HEM), beginning Tuesday, May 16. The work will take place 7 days/week. In addition, tie gangs 9161 and 9162 will move to the Sedalia Subdivision, between JEF and Kansas City (KCY), beginning Tuesday, May 16, until Monday, July 3, as well. The gangs will work together on a 8 days on/7 days pattern May 1- May 8, May 16 – May 23, June 1 – June 8, June 16 – June 23, and July 1 – July 3. The work will be 6:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. installing 86,000 ties on the single main track between Sedalia (SED), MP 189.07, and Pleasant Hill, MP 248.00, ten miles east of Lee’s Summit (LEE). At the same time, Curve Rail Gangs 9114 and 9115 will work from 12:01 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. between Sedalia, MP 153.53, and Rock Creek, MP 273.59, four miles east of KCY, replacing rail on 3.18 miles of curves.

    During the entire Phase 2 period, Trains 313 and 316 will operate with the schedules listed above.

    On May 16 – May 23, June 1 – June 8, June 16 – June 23, and July 1 – July 3, Trains 311 and 314 will be represented by bus (on the schedules listed above) between STL and KCY. Inventory will be shown in Arrow as bus schedules 4411 and 4414 and will be limited to 45 seats with two wheelchair spaces.

    On May 24 – May 31, June 9 – June 15, and June 24 – June 30, Trains 311 and 314 will be represented by bus (on the schedules listed above) between STL and JEF. Inventory will be shown in Arrow as bus schedules 4411 and 4414 and will be limited to 45 seats with two wheelchair spaces. A push-pull consist will be used to represent the trains between JEF and KCY.

    During several days of this work period, existing booking levels on the bus segments exceed the 45 seat capacity. Arrangements have been made to protect all of the reservations that have already booked.

    Phase 3 – July 4 – September 1

    Equipment Turns

    Trains 303/313 on Friday, March 31, will operate with a second locomotive from Chicago to Kansas City. This unit will be used to create a push-pull consist to operate between Kansas City and Jefferson City.

    Two equipment sets will operate in a three day cycle:

    Set A

  • Day 1: Nos. 303/313 CHI-KCY; at Kansas City, the extra locomotive will be added to the rear of the train to create a push-pull consist.

  • Day 2: No. 314 KCY-JEF and No. 311 JEF-KCY; at Kansas City, one locomotive will be set out and the remainder of the consist will represent No. 316.

  • Day 3: No. 304 STL-CHI.

    Set B

  • Day 1: No. 305 CHI-STL;

  • Day 2: No. 300 STL-CHI and No. 391 CHI-CDL;
  • Day 3: No. 392.

    All equipment sets will operate with the standard consist of 3 coaches/Club Dinette. Additional equipment sets (beyond the one extra locomotive) will not be required.
