Private Car Safety

Amtrak welcomes you to Washington for the Inauguration of America’s 44th President of the United States! We hope that your stay at our facility is enjoyable and that you and your guests thoroughly enjoy this memorable experience. To insure that everyone has a trip to remember, please follow these rules for your Safety and Security.

Brief your guests on all safety guidelines. This discussion should include while they are on your car as well as on Amtrak property. Please stress the high level of importance that we place on running a safe railroad and be sure and discuss items that are critical to being safe while on or near railroad facilities. This includes, but certainly not limited to using caution while on or near moving equipment, being aware of your surroundings and utilizing only approved walkways. Also, the weather will be a challenge over the next few days. With this cold weather, be careful of slips, trips and falls.

There will also be a very high level of visibility throughout the week. Both Amtrak and all private car owners/operators want to look their best. We realize that many of you have many VIP’s either traveling with you or visiting your car during your stay. Please insure that your guests are mindful of the image that all of us want to project.

All of your staff and guests are expected to wear their AMTRAK issued ID badges at all times while on Amtrak property. If you have ID’s for your specific car(s), that is fine, however, they do not replace the need for wearing AMTRAK supplied ID’s.

Due to security restrictions, access for the general public will be severely limited in critical areas of Union Station during the period January 17-21, particularly on boarding platforms and other operationally sensitive areas. It is likely that due to the dynamic nature of events restrictions may be altered with little or no notice. Access to these areas will be denied to anyone not holding/displaying proper authorizing documentation or an Amtrak/VRE/MARC train ticket.

Contained within this welcome packet are the requested quantity of uniquely numbered Private Car Guest badges and an assignment sheet. Anyone requiring access to the station platforms must be in possession of an assigned badge. It is the responsibility of the car owner or event organizer to issue the badges to guests and record the name on the appropriate corresponding line on the assignment sheet. The completed list (or facsimile) must be sent via fax to L.D. Smith, Amtrak Office of Security Strategy and Special Operations, no later than COB Monday, January 19 at (202) 906-3299 or via e-mail at smithda@amtrak.com.
