Regarding Mail and Express Changes

Here is the latest update regarding Mail and Express Changes.

  • Trains 3/4, The Southwest Chief

    Due to the elimination of the Mail and Express business, the CHI-LAX mail lines carried in both express cars and Roadrailers have been discontinued. We will continue to move empty Roadrailers from LAX to CHI for movement to the NS and empty express cars from CHI to LAX for storage. At this time, the train will continue to operate with three (3) locomotives and operate in direct release.

  • Trains 5/6, The California Zephyr

    Due to the elimination of the Mail and Express business, the CHI-EMY and CHI-DEN mail lines carried in express cars and the CHI-DEN mail lines carried in Roadrailers have been discontinued. Currently, there are several cars operating between CHI and EMY which will be moved back deadhead to CHI for storage. This train will be converted to graduated release beginning with Train 5(7) and Train 6(10). Expresstrak cars between CHI and EMY will continue to be handled up to two (2) cars per train.

  • Trains 7/8/27/28, The Empire Builder

    Due to the elimination of the Mail and Express business, the CHI-MSP mail lines carried in both express cars and Roadrailers have been discontinued. This train will remain in direct release however for the current time while we are handling Expresstrak cars between CHI and WEN. We will continue to handle up to two (2) cars per train.

  • Trains 19/20, The Crescent

    Due to the elimination of the Mail and Express business, the WAS-NOL mail line carried in express cars have been discontinued. In addition, the baggage car for Train 19 will now originate in Sunnyside Yard (SSY) with the passenger consist and will operate on the headend between the locomotives and crew dorm.

  • Trains 29/30, The Capitol Limited

    Due to the elimination of the Mail and Express business, the WAS-TOL and WAS-CHI mail lines carried in express cars have been discontinued. Due to equipment turns in CHI, this train will continue to operate in direct release until Trains 3/4 (see above) are converted. Expresstrak cars between CHI and WAS (destined to/from Florida) will continue to be handled up to two (2) cars per train.

  • Trains 40/41, The Three Rivers

    Due to the elimination of the Mail and Express business, the NYP-CHI mail lines carried in baggage cars and the PHL-CHI mail lines carried in express cars have been discontinued. We will continue to move empty Roadrailers from PHL to CHI for movement to the NS. At this time, the train will continue to operate with two (2) locomotives and operate in direct release.

  • Trains 48/49/448/449, The Lake Shore Limited

    Due to the elimination of the Mail and Express business, the ALB-CHI mail lines carried in Roadrailers have been discontinued. This train will be converted to graduated release beginning with Trains 49(5) / 449(5) and Trains 48(6) / 448(6). Expresstrak cars between CHI and ALB will continue to be handled up to two (2) cars per train.

  • Trains 79/80, The Carolinian

    Due to the elimination of the Mail and Express business, the NYP-CLT mail line carried in the second baggage car and the NYP-PHL mail line carried in mail handling cars have been discontinued. The working baggage car on the rear of the train will continue to operate and will originate in SSY with the passenger consist.

  • Trains 89/90, The Palmetto

    Due to the elimination of the Mail and Express business, the PHL-JAX mail lines carried in Roadrailers on Train 89 have been discontinued. This will allow Train 89 will to be converted to graduated release beginning with Train 89(5).

    The new consist for Trains 89/90 will be as follows:

  • NYP-WAS - 1 Electric Locomotive (Any kind)
  • WAS-MIA - 1 P42 Locomotive
  • NYP-MIA - Baggage Car
  • NYP-MIA - Amfleet II Business Class Coach
  • NYP-MIA - Amfleet II Lounge
  • NYP-MIA - 3 Amfleet II Coaches

  • Train 92, The Silver Star

    Due to the elimination of the Mail and Express business, the JAX-PHL mail lines carried in Roadrailers on Train 92 have been discontinued. This will allow Train 92 will to be converted to graduated release beginning with Train 92(5). In addition, the JAX-WAS diesel locomotive will no longer operate. This train will be operated with a single locomotive. As a reminder, a second locomotive is required by CSX Special Instructions when the consist is 13 cars or greater.
