Private Car Notice 7-05

Subject:

Donna Myers: Sunset Limited Service to NOL
Oakland and Kansas City Consist Information

Date: November 4, 2005    From: Don Cushine

Donna Myers:

I am pleased to announce that the vacancy that was created when Tim Donovan accepted a position with CSX has been filled by Donna Myers. Donna began her 18 year Amtrak career as a reservation agent and since that time, she has spent her last 16 years in the OPS Center in various capacities. This includes 11 years as Manager and she has worked on the NEC Car Desk, System Movement Desk, Intercity Movement Desk, Mail & Express Operations, Intercity Car Desk and the Intercity Power Desk. She has worked closely with field management and the railroads and she has an excellent working knowledge of the Amtrak system. Due to the current vacancies in operations, Donna will be splitting time in November between Operations and Ops Support. We hope to have Donna full time in her new capacity in December. Please join me in welcoming Donna Myers to the Operations Support Staff where she will be a tremendous asset to our team.

Sunset Limited

As of this weekend, train #1 & #2 will once again be operating between New Orleans and Los Angeles. It is still uncertain as to when the railroad east of New Orleans will be fully operational.

Oakland

We have worked very hard to develop Oakland as a long term parking facility as well as a great provider of service to our private car owners/operators. However, we have had a few issues recently that we would like to see resolved before we lose this great location. Please follow the below policies before this becomes any more of an issue.

1) Private car owners cannot bring their personal vehicles on paved areas between the Oakland yard tracks. This area is for maintenance vehicles only. If you have to load or unload items for your rail car, you must first get permission from the Manager on duty. We want to avoid any potential hazards so that your car will not get hit by railroad equipment.

2) The notification to the private car owners that we sent out regarding the new mandatory procedures does not seem to have gotten to everybody or it is being ignored. Several Amtrak managers have asked a few car owners/operators about the notification over the last couple of weeks and none of them claimed that they were aware of the new procedure.

Oakland has been handing out a copy of the procedure to help get the word out. If possible, please send your list of individuals who are expected to join you for a specific trip when you submit your movement request. We can then forward that to Oakland in the pnr and they will inform the guards.

Kansas City

For travel to Kansas City Union Station from Chicago, private cars must use train #303/323. Train #3 will not be available for future moves to Kansas City from Chicago.

The City of New Orleans

The Superliner Dining Car and Transition Dorm car will be restored to Trains 58/59, The City of New Orleans beginning with Train 58(11/8) and 59(11/9). As we discussed earlier this year, the baggage car has been replaced with a coach baggage car which would allow for the addition of one private car without the addition of an extra locomotive (based on the current consist). However, this will be re-evaluated as ridership begins to grow. The current consist is:

  • 1 P42 Locomotive
  • Transition Dorm – Lines 5809/5909 – Used for OBS crew and Business Travel.
  • Dining Car
  • Lounge
  • Baggage Coach – Lines 5930/5830 – Use for checked baggage service
  • Coach – Lines 5931/5831
  • Coach – Lines 5932/5832
  • Sleeper – Lines 5900/5800 – All rooms (except Room 1) available for sale

    Trains 21/22, The Texas Eagle

The Superliner Sightseer Lounge car will be restored to Trains 21/22, The Texas Eagle, in conjunction with a new menu being implemented in the Diner. We will attempt to begin adding the cars back after 11/1, depending on equipment availability, with the goal of having all 4 sets of 21/22 operating with a Lounge beginning with 21(11/6) and 22(11/8). In addition, the run thru between Trains 22/59 and 58/21 will be restored on November 9. Train 58(11/8) will run thru to train 21(11/9) while Train 22(11/8) will run thru to Train 59(9). The new consist of the train will be as follows:

  • P42 Locomotive
  • Transition Sleeper/Dorm - Lines 2132(Note new line number)/2219
  • Dining car
  • Lounge
  • Baggage Coach– Lines 2110/2210 – Used for checked baggage service
  • Coach – Lines 2111/2211
  • Coach - Lines 2112/2212 (on SAS days only) or Lines 2115/2215 on thru days
  • Sleeper - Lines 2120/2220 (on SAS days only) or Lines 2130/2230 on thru days
