"ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN AWARD"

Leading Historian of the Golden Age of American Passenger Railroads.

When Trains Were Elegantly Named and Lavish Passenger Attired.




Arthur Detmers Dubin, for more than 40 years assembled railway historial materials into library collection, throughtout his career he had great interest in railway passenger trains. Mr Dubin was attened Lake Forest College and the University of Michigan, worked as an architect in Chicago firm "Dubin, Dubin & Moutoussamy", retiring in 1993 as a senior partner. Mr. Dubin's knowledge of railway transportation allowed the firm to undertake projects for:

  • Chicago and Northwestern Railway,
  • Chicago Transit Authority,
  • Washington,
  • D.C., Metro, and
  • American Airlines.

    Mr. Dubin,s architectural successful, include:

  • Government buildings,
  • Military installations,
  • Schools and colleges,
  • Hospitals, and
  • Banks.

    Dubin collection included Pullman Standard Passenger Train Memorabilia and other railway historical materials.

    Mr. Dubin served on numerous advisory boards and commissions in the area of passenger railway transportation, leading to three published books:

  • Some Classic Trains,
  • More Classic Trains,
  • Pullman Paint, and Lettering Notebook:
    "A Guide to the Colors used on Pullman Cars from 1933 to 1969".

    Dubin’s Collection is held by:

    Seattle National Train Day 2013 Entries:

  • Will be accepted until Febuarary 1, 2013.
  • Finalists will be announced on March 1, 2013.
  • Final judging will take place April 1, 2013

    All finalists will be included in the Seattle National Train Day Exhibition and will be notified of award acceptance as a finalist via email only.

    All Award author's are encouraged to attend the Seattle National Train Day Exhibition's opening day reception.





  • Contestants are reminded to stay away from tracks, moving trains, yards, railroad structures as in: bridges, trestles, towers, signals, wires, rail equipment and the railroad right-of-way.

    Artist's must not trespass on railroad property or on private property adjacent to the railroad. Obtain permission first.

    Stay in public access areas such as stations,rail crossings, sidewalks, buildings. highway bridges, parking lots, highways, overpasses, national forest & parks, state/city public parks and public waterfront area. Obtain permission if accessins private property.

    All participants agree to assume the risk of harm and release Amtrak, Amtrak Cascades, Sound Transit, ATD LINES, National Train Day Assocation and All Operating Railways from all liability for personal injury and loss of property.

    Artist's are reminded that railroad tracks, trestles, yards and equipment are private property and that trespassers are subject to arrest and fines.

    Some stations served by Amtrak, Amtrak Cascades, Sound Transit Trains and Operating Railways require advance permission for photography.

    Always obey all contest, railway rules and Federal-Regional-State-Local Laws.

    Always be safe and use common sense. As much of railroad property is not fenced, nor are property lines marked, thus difficult to determine where railroad property begins & ends.




    ELIGIBILITY

    Participation in the Seattle National Train Day "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" (individual or collectively), the Contest constitutes full and unconditional agreement to, and acceptance of, National Train Day Association Official Rules. The Contest is owned and operated by The National Train Day Association "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST", is open to legal residents of Washington State, who are:

    (a) eighteen (18) years of age or older.

    (b) The parent, legal guardian or a grandparent with consent from the parent having legal guardian of a child entering the "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST".

    American Train Destination Lines, National Train Day Association Employees and Seattle Nation Train Day Sponsors, Committee Members, officers and directors of event, its parent companies, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising, promotion and fulfillment agencies, their immediate family members and persons living in their same household, are not eligible to win prizes in the "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST".

    The "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" is offered in all participating Rail Line Communities, whom have organized National Train Day Events and Washington State Residents only to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, shall only be construed and evaluated according to applicable State, City or Town Laws.





    GENERAL RULES OF CONTEST

    For "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" submissions made during the 2012-2013 season, the following guidelines apply: The applicant must be a US citizen or non-citizen lawfully and permanently residing in the United States, with in Washington State.

    The selected literary Work's will be awarded ______________ to produce a visual illustration celebrating the spirit of Washington State Railways.

    The literary work to be commissioned must be previously unpublished and not publicly viewed, and will become the property of the Seattle National Train Day Railway Literary Contest. Acknowledgment of the arthor will be made whenever the literary works' are used.

    The author will be expected to work in cooperation with the Seattle National Train Day Railway Literary Contest Executive Director to produce an acceptable literary work. The author will be provided with laminated with title page of all literary art submitted.

    By registering for the "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST", entrants agree:

    (a) To accept e-mail messages from National Train Day Association and Sponsoring affiliates,

    (b) Email Messages constitutes an inquiry and/or application for purposes and therefore, the "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" retains the right to contact entrants for such purposes.





    HOW TO ENTER

    COMPLETE APPLICATION REGISTRATION FORM

    Provide all requested information in the required fields contained in the entry registration form, submit email entry form.

    Any improperly submitted registrations will be RETURNED VOID.

  • Submitted Washington State Literary Work must be by writer/aurthor named.

  • Any winning "Literary Work" found not to be artist named will be disqualified from winning.

  • Entrant must be the owner of the "Literary Work", or the right to submit the "Literary Work".
  • All entries must be received by announced deadlines.
  • Postal Mail: enter deadline date.

    (b) Six(6) valid Washington State "Literary Works" maybe submited,

    (c) Included check or a money order made payable to National Train Day Association, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST", in the amount of $100 per "Art Work" entered or Maxium of $600 for six valid "Literary Work".

    NOTE: Any Washington State "LITERARY WORK" submitted by "Postal Mail" will NOT be returned.

    In the event that you do not:

    (i) Provide full registration information;
    (ii) Provide a valid Washington State Literary Work; or
    (iii) Submit check or a money order Payment of $100.00 per literary work entered or Maxium of $600 for Six valid literary work processing fee with a valid form, your entry will be VOID and you will not be entered into the Contest. All entries must be received by the deadline date to be eligible to win the "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST".

    Each entrant will be entered into the "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" in which he or she submits his or her registration information, unless otherwise notified.





  • FINALISTS AND WINNER

    Each "LITERARY WORK" submitted must be approved for posting on the Seattle National Train Day Association, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" Web-Page by a member of Seattle Train Day Committee, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" "LITERARY WORK" selection committee.

    Photos may be approved or rejected based on suitability or appropriate railway content for the "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" "LITERARY WORK" selection committee sole discretion. Only those literary work's that are approved for posting will be deemed eligible to win the "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST". All photos that are approved for posting on the Seattle National Train Day , "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" Web-Pag will be deemed "Finalists".

    The photograph that receives the most public on-line votes will be deemed the winning Seattle National Train Day, "AURTHER DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" Web-Page. One(1) first place winner will be chosen per category. For purposes of the Contest, a "vote" means a vote cast on the Seattle Train Day Association, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" Web-Page, by a "unique voter." A "unique voter" is an individual person:

    (a) Registered on the Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" Web-Page and confirmed their registration by clicking on the email sent to them at the email address they used to register;

    (b) Registration information (i.e., email address) that is not duplicative of another voter's information.

    A unique voter may vote no more than once each day for a unique Literary work, so that in a thirty(30) day calendar month, a unique voter may cast no more than thirty(30) votes for any single "LITERARY WORK". In addition to the Disqualification provisions set forth below, if Seattle National Train Day , "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" "LITERARY WORK" selection committee determines, in its sole discretion, that an abuse of the "unique voter" rule has occurred, Seattle National Train Day , "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" "LITERARY WORK" selection committee may disqualify votes cast by such voters or entrants, including if more than five(5) of such voters or entrants registered from the same computer "IP address" in a single calendar month.

    If there is an exact tie in the number of votes cast for two(2) or more "LITERARY WORK", then the winning prize will be split equally between those two (2) or more entrants.

    Each winner, and any runners up, will be notified by phone, email and/or postal mail. Each winner will be selected based upon the results of online voting, and will be subject to approval by Seattle National Train Day , "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" "LITERARY WORK" selection committee pending confirmation of each such winner's compliance with these Official Rules. Seattle National Train Day , "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" "LITERARY WORK" selection committee decisions are final on all matters relating to this "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST".





    PROMOTION

    From time to time, Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" may run a promotion with respect to Event Promotions and Literary Work Contest Marketing.





    WINNER PROMOTIONS

    From time to time, Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" may run a winner promotion with respect to promote the contest winner. This promotion is limited to first place contest winner, regardless of the Contest Year.





    PUBLISHING

    Contestants who reach the finalist stage of the Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" may have their "LITERARY WORK" selected for publishing in various railway magizines, other railway publications and collection. This selection in no way affects your chances of winning the Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST", or means that you have won the Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST". There will be no royalties paid to artist whose "LITERARY WORK" are published. Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" begins on the first day after the event ends, with a winning "LITERARY WORK" selected.





    WINNING ODDS

    The winning odds in the Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" are a function of a number of factors including, but not limited to:

    Number of entries,
    Number of votes cast,
    Number of votes you cause to be cast for your "LITERARY WORK",
    Date of entry

    Each winner will be subject to eligibility verification.

    Each winner will be required to sign an Affidavit of Eligibility/Liability and Publicity Release within thirty(30) days of attempted notification.

    (b). Contestant is the parent, legal guardian or a grandparent with consent from the parent or legal guardian of a person under the age eighteen(18) whom is participating in Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST";
    (c). Contestant has all of the rights and authority necessary to submit the "LITERARY WORK"(s) for entry in the Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" in compliance with these Official Rules, including the right to publish the "LITERARY WORK", and the right to grant the Promotion Release set forth hereinbelow;
    (d). The publication of the "LITERARY WORK"(s) will not infringe on the rights of any third party;
    (e). The "LITERARY WORK" submitted has not been digitally, or otherwise, altered;
    (f). Contestant has read the Privacy Policy and agrees to its terms and conditions in their entirety.

    CHAPTER CONTEST & RELEASE

    Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" excluding residents of other States, where otherwise prohibited by law, by submitting an entry, submitting a literary work(s) and participating in the Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST", contestant, for him/herself and on behalf of the another, irrevocably transfers, grants and assigns to Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST", its affiliates and its respective successors, assigns, and licensees, the right National Train Day Association and in perpetuity, to use the name, likeness, "LITERARY WORK", including any reproductions of same, in any and all media including, without limitation, use on the Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" Web-Page in connection with the Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" or other promotions and for any advertising or promotional purposes, without additional compensation,and releases Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" and any entity acting on behalf of Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" from any liability with respect thereto.

    Each State in Unitied State, has established a National Train Day Association Chapter, to which each Charpter and it affiliate local rail line community Charpter's has its own National Train Day "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" within that State's Chapter or affiliate local rail line community city or town participating in National Train Day Events or Celebrations. As such National Train Day Association hold the rights to establish, organize and administrate each Chapters National Train Day "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST".





    RELEASE OF LIABILITY

    To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, contestant, for him/herself, agrees that Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST", its affiliates, chapters employees, members, officers, directors, shareholders, agents, representatives, its respective successors, assigns, agencies and licensees shall not be liable for any personal injury, death, loss or damage of any kind or any other causes of action or claims related to contestant's participation in this Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" or acceptance or use of the prizes awarded including, without limitation, any claims based on publicity rights, defamation or invasion of privacy.

    GOVERNING LAW

    Nothing herein shall be construed to preclude any party from seeking injunctive relief in order to protect its rights pending an outcome in arbitration.

    To the extent permitted by law, Contestant agree that you will not bring, join or participate in any class action lawsuit as to any claim, dispute or controversy that you may have against Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST", as well as its legal representatives, affiliates, subsidiaries, chapters, agencies and their respective members, officers, directors, employees and agents with respect to the Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST".

    Contestant agree to the entry of injunctive relief to stop such a lawsuit or to remove you as a participant in the suit. Contestant agree to pay the attorney's fees and court costs that Seattle National Train Day, "ARTHUR DETMERS DUBIN ESSAY AND LITERARY CONTEST" incurs in seeking such relief.

    This provision preventing you from bringing, joining or participating in class action lawsuits:
